Lash Extensions FAQ

1. What are lash extensions exactly?

Lash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic, silk, or faux mink fibers that are individually applied to your natural eyelashes using a medical-grade adhesive. Unlike “strip lashes,” lash extensions are designed to enhance your eyes for weeks at a time by adding length, curl, and volume.

2. How long does the initial lash extensions application take?

A full set of lash extensions typically takes between 90 and 120 minutes. Because your stylist is meticulously applying one or more lash extensions to every single healthy natural lash, the process requires patience and precision.

3. How long do lash extensions usually last before falling out?

High-quality lash extensions generally last between 3 to 4 weeks. However, because lash extensions are attached to your natural hair, they will shed along with your natural eyelash growth cycle. To maintain a full look, most clients book a fill every 2-3 weeks.

4. Do lash extensions hurt when they are being applied?

No, the application of lash extensions should be a completely painless and relaxing experience. Most clients keep their eyes closed the entire time, and many even fall asleep while their lash extensions are being applied.

5. What is the difference between Classic, Volume, and Hybrid lash extensions?

Classic lash extensions involve applying a single extension to one natural lash for a natural look. Volume lash extensions use multiple lightweight fans per natural lash for a dramatic, fluffy effect. Hybrid lash extensions are a mix of both, offering a textured appearance.

6. Will lash extensions ruin my natural eyelashes over time?

When applied by a certified professional, lash extensions will not damage your natural lashes. Damage usually occurs if the lash extensions are too heavy for the natural lash to support or if multiple natural lashes are glued together.

7. Can I have an allergic reaction to the glue used for lash extensions?

While rare, some individuals may develop an allergy to the cyanoacrylate found in lash extensions adhesive. If you have sensitive eyes, ask your stylist for a patch test 24 hours before your full lash extensions appointment.

8. Should I remove my contact lenses before getting lash extensions?

Yes, it is highly recommended to remove contact lenses before your lash extensions service. This prevents the lenses from trapping any adhesive fumes, which could cause dryness or irritation during the application process.

9. Can I get lash extensions if I have very thin or sparse natural lashes?

Yes, you can still enjoy lash extensions! A skilled technician will use lightweight Volume lash extensions to create a fuller appearance without putting unnecessary weight on your delicate natural hairs.

10. Is it safe to get lash extensions while pregnant?

Generally, yes, but you should consult your doctor first. The main challenge with lash extensions during pregnancy is lying flat on your back for an extended period, which can be uncomfortable in the later stages.

11. How long do I have to wait to get my lash extensions wet?

Most stylists recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before getting your lash extensions wet to allow the adhesive to fully cure. Some modern adhesives for lash extensions can be misted to cure faster, but “better safe than sorry” is the best policy.

12. What is the best way to clean and wash my lash extensions?

To clean your lash extensions, use a dedicated, oil-free lash foam cleanser and a soft brush. Gently massage the base of the lash extensions to remove oil and debris, then rinse with cool water and pat dry.

13. Is it okay to wear mascara while I have lash extensions on?

It is best to avoid mascara while wearing lash extensions, especially waterproof formulas. Mascara is difficult to remove and the oils can break down the bond of your lash extensions, causing them to shed prematurely.

14. Which skincare products should I avoid while wearing lash extensions?

You must avoid all oil-based products around the eyes, including oil cleansers and heavy eye creams. Oil is a solvent that dissolves the adhesive used for lash extensions.

15. What is the best sleeping position to preserve my lash extensions?

Sleeping on your back is the best way to protect your lash extensions. If you sleep on your side or stomach, the friction against the pillow can cause your lash extensions to twist or fall out early.

16. Can I go to the gym, pool, or sauna with lash extensions?

Yes, you can live an active lifestyle with lash extensions. However, you should rinse your lash extensions with fresh water after swimming in chlorine or sweating heavily to remove any chemicals that might degrade the glue.

17. How can I safely remove my lash extensions at home?

You should never attempt to pull off your lash extensions at home, as this will pull out your natural lashes. If you need your lash extensions removed, visit a professional who uses a specialized cream remover.

18. How often should I book a “fill” appointment for my lash extensions?

For the best results, book a “fill” for your lash extensions every 2 to 3 weeks. This ensures that outgrown lash extensions are replaced and gaps from natural shedding are filled in.

19. When is it time to take a break from wearing lash extensions?

A break from lash extensions isn’t strictly necessary if they are applied correctly. However, if you notice your natural lashes becoming shorter, take a 4-6 week break to allow your natural growth cycle to replenish.
